"If you have a
dream about homebirth... and
experiencing a peaceful and beautiful
childbirth -- here you will learn
more about
giving birth at home."
|
When a woman gives birth to
her baby at home, rather than
the labor and delivery ward of
a hospital or birthing center,
the birthing even is called
homebirth. Home births are
generally attended by a
midwife, and sometimes by
general practitioners or other
medical professionals as well.
Some mothers choose to give
birth without any medical
professional present – this is
generally known as an
"unassisted home birth".
In choosing home birth, the
mother generally has more
control over her own body and
surroundings, over the whole
process of giving birth to her
own baby. The birthing mother
can eat and move around, sleep
and do anything she pleases -
activities which may be
discouraged in a hospital
setting.
Homebirth midwives generally
view birth as a natural
process, and therefore keep
their intervention and any
other sort of medical
intervention to a minimum.

Homebirthing
Women
In most cultures throughout history, women
have given birth at home. The majority of women
worldwide continue to birth their babies in
non-hospital settings today, and child birth is
viewed as an integral part of family life.
The advent of obstetrics in the late 20th
century had a tremendous effect on childbirth
customs in many Western countries. The birthing
process became segregated from mainstream
family life, and home birth declined due to
migration to urban centers and increased
accessibility of hospitals.
However, today the World Health Organization
encourages the use of more naturalistic,
small-scale methods of childbirth, rather than
the large-scale units now prevalent in
developed countries.
